STI stands for sexually transmitted infection. These include viruses and bacteria that can be passed during intimate contact. Depending upon the particular infection, the way these organisms spread from one person to another will vary.

Many of the STIs are treatable, but some are not - once you get an untreatable STI, you just have to manage it for the rest of your life. That said, they are all preventable if you have the knowledge. If you suspect you have an STI, contact a physician or let a trusted adult know so you can seek treatment.
